The Kalgoorlie Miner has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Deputy Editor who is passionate about quality journalism and reporting on local news.

Based in Kalgoorlie and reporting to the Editor, this role is focused on writing significant stories, generating news ideas and helping ensure the newspaper’s daily story and production deadlines are met.  

The key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Driving the daily news agenda for the team of journalists and photographers.
  • Writing challenging news stories of the day but also being able to turn your hand to light features and any news, entertainment or photo stories that may require coverage.
  • Pitch news ideas during the daily news conferences and keep up with the latest local, state and national news through digital news sites and social media.
  • Use your news judgement and experience to determine what stories are covered and from what angles.
  • Assist and mentor in news writing and interviewing techniques for the younger journalists.
  • Be the first point of contact between the public and the newsroom and direct story leads to the appropriate journalists and photographers.
  • Fill in as Editor when required.

  • Be able to develop close relationships with major stakeholders in the region and be active and represent the newspaper within the community.


  • A keen interest in social media and online news.
  • Experience, or a keen interest, in mining industry news.
  • An interest in living in a regional city.
