About you
Based in our Geraldton office and reporting to the Mid-West Editor, we have a position available for a Reporter to join our dynamic team. This role would suit a graduate journalist or someone with 1-2 years’ industry experience. It will have you covering a range of news in a region rich in potential for breaking and telling important yarns while honing your craft with the Geraldton Guardian. This paper publishes twice a week, additional to our free weekly paper, the Midwest Times, and our expanding digital platforms.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualities:
- A tertiary qualification in journalism or a similar field;
- The ability to work under high pressure and be flexible with work hours;
- A talent for hard work and team work;
- Highly motivated with a positive attitude;
- Strong interviewing and communication skills;
- A sense of urgency and focus on deadlines;
- A passion for local news and a strong interest in current affairs;
- Strong news sense and hunger to get to the bottom of a story;
- Existing skills or a strong desire to upskill with digital production and social media promotion; and
- A valid drivers’ licence.
About the role
From the police beat, the courtroom, local and State politics to telling community-driven and feelgood stories. From the farming, mining and fishing rounds to writing features, profiles and entertainment pieces (maybe even some sport), you will have the opportunity to cut your teeth on a wide variety of stories. The West Australian and its regional newsrooms have a strong bond and regularly work together and share content, giving regional reporters the chance to have their work published across the State. The role will enable you to partake in tasks such as:
• Gathering and writing original news stories for publication in print and online platforms;
• Developing positive relationships with key people and organisations;
• Breaking news stories and creating engaging content;
• Contributing to news planning meetings and liaising with the Editor regarding story development;
• Interviewing and photographing subjects confidently and professionally; and
• Representing the Company in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
